The Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) has been producing natural gas near Ameland since the 1980s. The production locations (two offshore platforms and one land location) used part of the extracted natural gas to generate electricity for its own installations. Due to stricter emission requirements and its own sustainability ambitions, NAM has electrified and modernized the installations at all locations on Ameland.
Activities
To electrify the production platforms, an electricity cable was first laid from the village of Buren to the land location and then from the land location through the seabed to the large platform off the coast. At the same time, NAM carried out major maintenance. The work is carried out by Boskalis and the Amelander companies Spoelstra and Nagtegaal, among others.
Saving energy
NAM now uses green energy instead of raw natural gas for its production locations. This avoids significant CO₂ and NOx emissions and results in significant energy savings of around 200 TJ. In 2023, all NAM gas extraction locations will be supplied with green energy and the electrification will be festively completed with a meeting in the Ameland Nature Center.
