As part of Sustainable Ameland, the swimming pools at the Boomhiemke and Klein Vaarwater holiday parks received their own gas-fired combined heat and power installation. This was progressive at the time, but we are now looking at truly sustainable alternatives.
Background
Producing electricity in a large power plant has two disadvantages (in addition to the emissions from the power plant): the power often has to travel a long way to the user and the heat generated in the power plant is usually lost.
It is actually smarter to produce electricity where you can put the heat to good use. That is the principle of ‘cogeneration’. The technology, a gas engine with a dynamo, is reliable, efficient and small-scale.
