The Sustainable Amelander section features Amelanders who are working on sustainability. This time Bo van Raalte and Jelle Westra talk about making their rental home more sustainable.
“We have lived here for two years now. Our house is a national-monumental rental home of the Municipal Housing Company from Ameland,” Bo explains. “Through an employee of the municipality we heard that our house was eligible for new glass,” says Jelle. “In the summer of 2023, 12 windows were replaced with special insulating glass.”
Condensation
Bo: “The existing windows often fogged up on the inside. The condensation caused mold in the frame. With a few windows it kept coming back. But now, we don’t have this problem anymore.
More comfort, lower consumption
Bo and Jelle are happy with the new glass. Jelle: “It provides more comfort and our gas consumption is noticeably lower. In the winter months the thermostat was set to 18 or 19 degrees. For an old house in a winter period with mostly easterly winds, I think that’s pretty neat.”
Being conscious
“We also pay attention to our energy consumption. We keep the door to the utility room closed to prevent heat from escaping. A rug or extra layer of clothing is also not unusual with us,” Bo said. “We also have LED lighting and separate our waste as best we can,” Jelle concludes.
As a homeowner, you can apply for a grant to replace existing glass with monument glass, check out the grant here.
