Visit by water technology students from developing countries

In September, a group of students from the so-called Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) visited Ameland. SIDS is a group of islands recognized by the United Nations in developing areas, mostly located in the Southern Hemisphere. The students who visited Ameland are following a master’s degree in Delft at the Institute for Water Education ( IHE-Delft).

The students came to Ameland to become acquainted with the unique water situation on the Wadden Islands. They were also interested in the Wadden Campus and the way in which Amelanders are involved in sustainable energy projects. They spoke with Mayor Leo Pieter Stoel about challenges that islands face, including in the areas of sustainability and tourism. An evening tour of the lighthouse was also on the program and the group took an extensive walk on the Wadden Sea.
