SHINES project launched

SHINES project launched For exploiting potential energy from water

The SHINES project was launched in early March; a European collaboration to further exploit the potential of tidal and river energy in Northwest Europe. Ameland is one of the participants in the project and aims to accelerate the possisbilities of harvesting energy from water.

Testing TidalKite

Through the Shines project, testing of SeaQurrent’s TidalKite system in the Borndiep near Ameland will continue. The aim is to supply electricity to Ameland’s electricity grid by 2025. After a successful test period, a decision will be made on whether to add more kites.

Utilise energy from water

Energy from water is an important topic for the municipality of Ameland. Ameland wants to meet the local energy demand as much as possible locally and is committed to local renewable energy sources. As an island surrounded by water, tidal power fits perfectly into that picture. However, experience in recent years shows that harvesting this does not happen overnight. The insights from the SHINES project are important to get to a feasible energy mix for Ameland and thus following up on Ameland’s 2035 ambition.

About SHINES

The SHINES project (Showcasing Hydrokinetic energy Innovations for Northwest European Energy Sovereignty) brings together 14 partners from France, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Co-funded by Interreg North West Europe under the 4th project call, SHINES aims to unlock the potential of tidal and river energy systems, an opportunity still largely untapped in the region.

Ameland’s Energy Cooperative

Besides the municipality, the Amelander Energy Cooperative is also a participant in the project. They want to supply locally generated renewable energy, for example from the TidalKite, to customers. In the process, profits will be put into new projects on and around the island.
