Project partners IANOS and Duurzaam Ameland are working on a smart energy system

Ameland is working on the energy system of the future in various ways. Including through the European IANOS project and the Sustainable Ameland Agreement. On Friday, September 2, project partners from these two initiatives came together on Ameland. The target? Informing each other and discussing the latest developments.

IANOS project

IANOS stands for ‘Integrated Solutions For Decarbonisation and Smartification of Islands’. Through the IANOS project, Ameland, together with other European islands, is working on the development of an ICT platform, a so-called Virtual Power Plant. The intention is to smartly link the generation of sustainable energy (for example the Ameland Solar Park, the solar panels on the homes of residents and entrepreneurs, the hybrid heat pumps) to the demand for energy via the Virtual Power Plant. This is advantageous because locally sustainably generated energy can then be used to maximum effect.

Step-by-step

The development of the Virtual Power Plant is going step by step. To create the ICT platform, for example, technology is required that can read how much power is generated at which installation. For a good balance between supply and demand for sustainable energy, it can be useful to temporarily ‘switch off’ locations where sustainable energy is generated or store it in a battery or as hydrogen. This then requires settlement of revenues and costs. The platform ultimately consists of many facets that must communicate with each other in the right way.

Project partners

A number of the project partners present provided an update on their contribution to the IANOS project. TNO explained how to create a smart model and connections between the parts of the energy system. ReFlex addressed the question of how to connect installations to ICT software. RePowered spoke about the commercial side and the trading of green energy. The AEC paid attention to communication and participation on Ameland and the 2Token project. SeaQurrent provided an update on the development of the Tidal Kite. SUWOTEC talked about the battery they are developing to store sustainable energy. The municipality of Ameland discussed the sustainability program with which the municipality gives direction to its leading ambition.
