On 26 and 27 November, the municipality of Ameland and IANOS organised a meeting for projectpartners. The meeting, which took place at the Nature Centre of Ameland, focused on the coordination of the implementation.
Virtual Power Plant
Ameland develops a ‘Virutal Power Plant’ within the IANOS project. In this digital platform, renewable energy generation, storage/conversion and users are connected to each other. This enhances the efficiency of the use of renewable energy. The result shows how this can eventually be deployed island-wide.
Decarbonisation of Islands
There are more than 2,700 islands all over Europe and each island plays an important role in the transition away from fossil fuels towards a cleaner energy. Each island has its own conditions, depending on its geographic location, (political) regulations, and infrastructure and each island has its own specific energy-related challenges. The IANOS project contributes to solving these challenges.
Pilot Islands
IANOS selected the islands of Ameland (Netherlands) and Terceira (Portugal) to serve as “Pilot Islands” because they both represent common EU challenges. After the initial phase, IANOS will implement the solutions on three “fellow Islands” to validate the replicability potential of the results of the test islands. The fellow islands selected are: Lampedusa (Italy), Bora Bora (French Polynesia) and Nisyros (Greece).
