Choosing insulation material

Insulation made from recycled glass, plastic or biobased materials. There are different types available. But when do you choose which insulation material?

Space first determining choice

The space you want to insulate partly determines the choice between the different materials. Depending on the location of the insulation, certain materials are not recommended or are very suitable.

Cost price

Requesting quotes helps to gain insight into the costs for insulation, but also to compare advice on materials, working methods and implementation times.

Environmental friendliness of insulation materials

MilieuCentraal has mapped out the environmental friendliness of insulation materials. Materials are assessed according to greenhouse gas emissions, land use, impact on soil and biodiversity and toxins. Read more on MilieuCentraal.

Correct application is important

Apply the insulation material correctly. It must be securely attached and the parts must fit together properly. This prevents cold spots, energy loss and condensation and mold formation.

Biobased insulation material

Biobased insulation material is made from natural raw materials such as hemp, flax, cellulose and wood fibers. It is a sustainable alternative to traditional insulation materials that are often made from non-renewable raw materials, such as rock wool or glass wool. Biobased insulation material has a low environmental impact and is fully recyclable, making it an interesting choice for those who want to insulate their home sustainably. Read more about this»

Why choose biobased?

Biobased insulation material has comparable insulation values as traditional materials. In addition, the material is very vapour-open, which means that moisture in the home can be removed better. This reduces the risk of mold formation and improves the air quality in your home. Bio-based insulation material is also often very easy to install (without gloves), making it easy to get started yourself.

Which types are available?

There are different types of biobased insulation material available, each with their own unique properties. Hemp and flax insulation are made from the fibers of the hemp and flax plants and have excellent insulating properties. Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper and is therefore a very sustainable material. Wood fiber insulation is made from wood chips and has good insulating properties and high sound insulation. Cotton insulation is a nice material to work with. Not only because it is more flexible and soft, it is also cheaper. See biobased building materials»
